Great Barrington — The town has announced that it has hired Housatonic resident Joe Aberdale as the town’s new Department of Public Works Superintendent. According to a news release issued by town publicist Ellen Lahr, Aberdale will oversee the town’s highway and wastewater operations, cemeteries, waste transfer facility, and other town infrastructure. Lahr wrote that Aberdale’s family established Aberdale’s Market in Housatonic, and Aberdale became the owner of the store in 2006 before he sold the store in 2021. According to his LinkedIn profile, Aberdale worked for the Unistress Corporation of Pittsfield starting in February 2007 as a senior project executive. The company specializes in the design, production, and construction of large-scale precast and prestressed concrete structures. He worked as a senior project executive for the company until June 2018, when he became the company’s vice president of construction, drafting, and engineering, and vice president of construction services. His LinkedIn profile lists that he worked for the company until June of this year. “At Unistress, Aberdale managed project budgets ranging from $75 to $125 million annually and oversaw major construction projects from New Jersey to Maine,” Lahr wrote in her news release. “His project oversight work included the Tappan Zee Bridge, now the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo bridge, the Yankee Stadium parking structures, and the award-winning Goethals Bridge for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.” In her news release, Lahr does not list Aberdale’s salary or contract term. However, on the town’s website, the page that asks for applicants for the position lists that the salary of the DPW Superintendent would be up to $100,000 depending on qualifications and work experience. It also lists that the DPW operating budget is approximately $5.4 million with 23 full-time employees and three part-time employees.
